Way to Go Anthony
Way to go Anthony Weiner. You’ve given us endless moments on C-Span fighting for the right causes, fighting against the Republicans; all with emotion and sincerity. What would you have said if this were one of the other 434 Members of the House of Representatives and not yourself? You’d have been right out there demanding that they resign, that they have brought shame and disgrace to themselves and to the institution.
So, what’s different now? Ah, yes, you’re the one bringing shame and disgrace but it can’t possibly be that there’s any hypocrisy involved, can it?
Maybe it’s time to focus on, I don’t know, how about the fact that we’re now headed for our third trillion dollar deficit? Or we could focus on the fact that no one wants to solve the problems of social security and Medicare despite the Baby Boomer retirement dilemma. Or how about the fact that the economy isn’t exactly recovering and the housing market is flat. There’s always the fact that we’re celebrating the drop in gasoline prices to below $4 a gallon at the same time corn and wheat are at record highs.
The real focus, at least for those of us in politics is not on solving these problems it’s on figuring out who may or may not be out of a job when the re-districting lines emerge in the various states. And that gets me back to my original point. Representative Weiner may have performed his single greatest act not on the cell phone but because of the cell phone. With New York slated to lose two congressional districts, who do you think is going to be saved? His replacement with fourteen months of seniority or a Member of Congress with fourteen, sixteen or twenty years of seniority?
So, when Mr. Weiner decides to go he needs to do so knowing that he has sacrificed his political life for those of his team mates. And as talented as he is, he will no doubt surface in some other capacity, maybe even following the former Governor of New York who has found new life on television. Come on, you know how entertaining it would be to watch a 2011 version of point-counterpoint with Anthony Weiner on one side and maybe Bill O’Reilly on the other. It would certainly help the sagging ratings of Fox.
